About the Instructor

Ever since she first heard the pounding beat of the surdo drum and witnessed the hypnotic hip-sway of the Brazilian samba dancer, Rebekah Fowler has spent the last ten years of her life studying the Afro-Brazilian dance and cultural traditions found in Bahia and beyond. Her areas of interest include

Traditional Bahian samba-de-roda (circle samba)
Rio-style samba (as seen in the ever-popular Carnaval of Rio de Janeiro)
Devotional dances of the orixás , dança afro (a uniquely Brazilian synthesis of Traditional African and contemporary Western dance forms)
Popular Bahian street dances such as samba reggae and pagode.

In the US as well as Manchester, Rebekah has worked in dance studios, schools and community centres teaching Brazilian dance to a variety of ages and abilities. In San Antonio and Austin ( Texas), she worked as a dancer and choreographer for the Ilê Bahia de San Antonio Performance Ensemble and the Brazilian percussion band Sambaxé. She has also studied capoeira with Grupo Capoeira Brazil.

In addition to training in America , she has also studied Afro-Brazilian dance in Salvador, Brazil, with members of the world-renowned Balé Folclorico da Bahia, Rosangela Silvestre and DanceBrazil.
